If your dog or cat sleeps on the bed, you already know the trade: warm company at night, a layer of hair in the morning. You don't have to choose between the two. A short routine, done consistently, keeps the bed presentable without banning anyone from it.
The daily two minutes
- Shake the top layer outside or over the floor. Most loose hair sits on the surface of the duvet cover or flat sheet. A firm shake removes more than a vacuum does on smooth fabrics.
- Keep a rubber glove on the nightstand. A damp rubber glove dragged across the sheet gathers hair into a clump you can lift off in one motion. It works on cotton, bamboo viscose and microfibre.
- Use a throw where your pet actually lies. Pets pick a spot and return to it. A washable throw on that spot takes most of the load.
The weekly ten minutes
- Brush your pet before bed a few nights a week. Hair that ends up in the brush never ends up in the bed.
- Vacuum the mattress and the gap between mattress and headboard. Hair collects there and migrates back onto clean sheets.
- Wash pillowcases twice as often as sheets. They carry the most dander and oils.
Wash day
