Roughly half of American dog owners let the dog on the bed. If that is you, the bedding you buy has a harder job than most: it has to handle hair, dander, paws, drool and far more washing than a pet-free bed. Here is what actually matters.
1. Fabric: anti-static beats everything else
The single biggest factor in how much hair your bedding holds is static. Choose a naturally low-static fibre such as bamboo viscose. Avoid microfiber, polyester blends, flannel and jersey knits, all of which grab hair and keep it through the wash.
2. Weave: smooth and tight
A 300 thread count sateen weave gives hair nothing to hook into. Higher thread counts sound luxurious but trap heat, and a dog on the bed already adds warmth.
3. A duvet cover you can zip off
The duvet takes most of the abuse. A cover with a zipper and internal corner ties can come off in thirty seconds and go straight into a cold wash, so the comforter underneath stays clean. Furify's Bamboo Duvet Set has both.
4. Deep pockets and full elastic on the fitted sheet
Dogs circle, dig and pull. A fitted sheet with 18-inch pockets and elastic all the way round stays put; one with corner elastic only will be on the floor by morning.
5. Cooling matters more than you think
A 60-pound dog is a heater. Bamboo wicks moisture and regulates temperature, so the bed stays comfortable for both of you. This is also why hot sleepers gravitate to bamboo.
6. Skin safety
Dogs sleep with their noses and paws on the fabric. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which confirms the textile was tested for harmful substances such as formaldehyde. Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, which helps with dander sensitivity.
7. A washing routine that works
Shake the sheets outdoors, wash cold on a normal cycle with a mild detergent, and tumble dry low. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibre and makes hair cling. Wash the duvet cover weekly and the sheets every one to two weeks if the dog sleeps on the bed nightly.
